Revised40
FORTY CARDS · FIVE RARES · TEN UNCOMMONS
Introduction
Revised40 takes you back to the days when the best version of your deck was still a few trades away. Rares really were rare in your collection, and even having all the uncommons you wanted was far from a given. You knew which cards would make your deck better — you just didn’t own them yet.
So you made the most of what you had. A prized rare earned its place, an overlooked common filled a gap, and every trade could bring your deck a little closer to the version you had in mind. Building and collecting went hand in hand.
With only five rare slots and ten uncommon slots, Revised40 captures that feeling. You still get to chase the strongest deck you can build, but every upgrade has a cost: which card deserves the slot, and what can a common do almost as well? It’s a perfect nostalgia format, where min-maxing is an art.
Deck Construction
Minimum 40 cards, no maximum beyond being shuffleable; no sideboard.
Up to 5 rares and 10 uncommons in total, with at most 3 copies of any one rare or uncommon. Commons have no copy limit unless listed below. Use Revised rarity, including the two format-specific upgrades.
Three copies of one rare leave two rare slots. A different printing does not change a card’s Revised40 rarity.
Printings & Reprints
Revised, French/German/Italian FWB and FBB, Summer Magic (Edgar), and their artist proofs are legal.
Matching-art, matching-border reprints are welcomed; ABU Plateau and Arabian Nights Serendib Efreet are exceptions. Altered Revised cards and proxies are allowed; originals are encouraged.
Banned & Restricted
Restricted cards: one copy each, still counting toward their rarity allowance. Banned cards cannot be included.

A cheap threat, but not an unlimited common in this format.
Maximum three copies. Each copy uses one of your ten uncommon slots.
Your burn package competes for the same uncommon allowance as the rest of your deck.
Maximum three copies. Each copy uses one of your ten uncommon slots.
Playing Rules
Mana burn: unused mana empties at phase endings, not step endings, costing one life per mana. This is life loss, not damage.
Current Oracle text applies. Lord of Atlantis is a Merfolk; Fungusaur triggers on damage; interrupts are instants; tapped Howling Mine does not trigger.
No tournament draws: untimed drawn games are replayed. Timed drawn matches use a random winner, such as dice or a sudden-death Orb-flipping contest.
